BOYAKODAH

BOYAKODAH, performance with dancers and musicians on stage
Length 1h10

With alternating outlooks, sustained and controlled rhythms, as well as bodies teeming here and there, BOYAKODAH (meaning happiness in Guéré, the language in use in the western parts of the Ivory Coast) is a true ode to life. Georges Momboye explores all of its facets, and aside from the quasi-physical light radiating from the bodies in movement, combines two objects with the talent of these performers, the mortar and the pestle, sexual symbols of complementarity, procreation, strength and harmony.
This show looks for a balance between body and soul, rhythm and silence, to evoke man’s ultimate and absolute aspiration to happiness and pleasure.

Created at the Théâtre Romain Rolland de Villejuif
Co-produced by: Théâtre Romain Rolland de Villejuif, Centre Culturel des Bords de Marne in Le Perreux, With help for the creative choreography from the Conseil Général du Val de Marne [Departmental council for the Val de Marne region], co-produced by: Théâtre Silvia Monfort, with help with regards to distribution from the Biennale Nationale de Danse du Val du Marne.

PRELUDE A L'APRES MIDI D'UN FAUNE
Momboye

PRELUDE A L'APRES MIDI D'UN FAUNE by CLAUDE DEBUSSY
Preceding the Rite of Spring.
Total length of performance: 1 hour

Georges Momboye inhabits the range of Debussy’s music.

“Ivory Coast version of Nijinski.
As an introduction to the Prélude, musician Thomas Guei plays a brilliant percussions number whilst Momboye is lying on a platform, completely still in the darkness. When Debussy’s music starts, the dancer slowly gets up and gives himself over to a brilliant demonstration of his art, all muscles and suppleness, nobility and gentleness…  An astounding solo for its beauty, its intelligence and its musicality…”
René Sirvin - Le Figaro.

THE RITE OF SPRING

IGOR STRAVINSKI’S THE RITE OF SPRING
Total length of performance: 1 hour

The creation in 1913 of the proved to be a great artistic scandal of the time: Stravinski’s score, Nijinski’s choreography, due to their primal energy, shocked many a soul.  Indeed, this music pertaining to earth and sacrifice has not lost in power.  Since the Russian ballets, one could even say it has gained in levels of interpretation. The following was never explored : the meeting of this world with African culture, in its relation to rhythms, rites, nature and the body.

These two performances are commissioned and co-produced by the 13e Biennale Nationale de Danse du Val de Marne.

Co-production: Town of Fontenay -sous-bois, Théâtre Jean Vilar de Vitry, Théâtre André Malraux – Rueil Malmaison, Arcachon –Culture "Théâtre l'Olympia".  With the Creative and Operative Help of the Conseil Général du Val-de-Marne, and with the support of the ADAMI.

CLAIR DE LUNE

CLAIR DE LUNE, “young person” and “all audiences” performance
Length: young person performance: 50 min – performance suitable for all audiences: 1 hour

As a point of reference for thousands of Africans who live in villages without any electrical lighting, the moon is a source of light, which embellishes hearts and bodies and sends the soul on a wonderful journey.
Soothed by the sometimes subdued, sometimes prying light, it leads us to the heart of a thousand and one stories of Africa and elsewhere.

Clair de Lune is commissioned and co-produced by the Théâtre  Antoine Vitez, the Town of Ivry-sur-Seine, Espace Jacques Prévert d’Aulnay sous bois, the Centre culturel Aragon Triolet d’Orly and Les Théâtres de Maisons Alfort. With the help of the Conseil Général du Val-de-Marne and the support of the SPEDIDAM.

SURESNES CITE DANSE 2006 creation aimed at “all audiences” and “young people”
Length 45 min

“All aboard for HIP HOP land at SURESNES. Bracing and breathtaking hip hop dance finds a contemporary foothold.  A “full steam ahead” performance !
The idea of showing that there are partnerships ready to be forged between an urban setting and a powerful society, between Africa and the West, has inspired the choreographer Georges Momboye.
Poor stranded wretches or carefully collared passengers, these are the dancers planted there on the train station platform, with rubber knees, pointy elbows, and very elaborate steps and acrobatics… it’s funny and has a great visual impact.  Three quarters of an hour of supple and very skilful tonic hip hop”
